Ivan Segura
Ivan Segura works as the Director of Multicultural Affairs at the SC Commission for Minority Affairs. He has over twenty years of experience in community activism, arts advocacy and grassroots leadership development for Latinos in SC. His volunteer advocacy work includes serving as the Executive Director of Palmetto Luna Arts, an organization dedicated to making a positive impact in society by fostering Latino arts and culture in SC. He served eight years in the ACLU’s National Board of Directors and twelve years in the ACLU of SC’s Board.
Mr. Segura is the sole recipient in South Carolina of the prestigious Ohtli Award. This is the highest recognition awarded by the Mexican Government to members of the community who have contributed in an exceptional manner to the development of the Mexican community living abroad. Mr. Segura’s advocacy, arts and leadership activities place emphasis on the development of Latino youth and children as the future leaders of our community and nation.
Valerie Byrd Fort
Valerie Byrd Fort is an Instructor in the iSchool at the University of South Carolina. She teaches classes about Children's Literature and School Librarianship. She is active in a number of local and national library associations, including the South Carolina Library Association, South Carolina Association of School Librarians, and the Association of Library Service to Children. She cares deeply about libraries and the freedom to read.
Marty McGuy
Marty McGuy is a drag king from Columbia, South Carolina. For Marty’s day job as an educator, he is committed to helping improve the quality of care and education of the children of South Carolina. He was able to combine his passions for education and storytelling by doing drag storytime events for families at the local LGBTQIA+ resource center, The Harriet Hancock Center. When the pandemic came, Marty made storytime digital, broadcasting live weekly for over a year. Now, they often volunteer for Drag Story Hour events across both South Carolina and North Carolina. Marty is also a fierce advocate for Drag King visibility. He helps host drag shows across Columbia, SC with his drag partner, Han D Mann, through the drag group they co-founded, Columbia Kings N’ Things.
