Not every historic building can be saved, but many of the materials and architectural features that tell its story can be preserved and reused. Across the country, architectural salvage has become an effective way to conserve historic resources, reduce waste, and create economic value.

Join us for a discussion of the opportunities and challenges of architectural salvage in our region. Whether you're a homeowner, preservation enthusiast, contractor, entrepreneur, craftsperson, or simply appreciate historic architecture, you'll gain insight into how communities can preserve more of their built heritage. Creating economically viable solutions requires broad community support and a variety of resources.

Dr. Alan Todd of the Conway Architectural Salvage & Heritage Project non-profit will share practical experience from projects across South Carolina, including the deconstruction of Columbia's historic Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse building.

Ms. Betsy Kleinfelder, Preservation Planner for The City of Columbia, will discuss recent demolition of historic buildings in Columbia. It will include a look at what policies are in place to prevent demolition and what other municipalities are doing to prevent waste of viable historic materials.
