OPEN CALL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS: CAE is Now Accepting Submissions for the 2024 – 2025 Art in the Airport Program

Calling all professional artists! The Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is now accepting submissions for the 2024 – 2025 Art in the Airport program.

Now in its fifth year, the wildly popular program showcases the artistic talents of four artists selected from across the Columbia region. Each artist will have the opportunity to display their work in the busiest part of the airport for roughly three months.

The Art in the Airport program not only enhances the passengers’ experience while traveling through CAE, but it also creates an immediate sense of place to those visiting Columbia, SC. Once a traveler lands at CAE, these pieces of art are the first creative and cultural touchpoints they see as a connection to the region.

Would you like your artwork to be considered for this prestigious program? Below are details on how an artist can submit artwork and the guidelines associated with the program.

Submission Requirements:

To apply for CAE’s Art in the Airport program, please email the following information to submissions@flycae.com by November 30, 2023 at 5 p.m.

  • Name, address, phone, email, website (if applicable)

  • Artist bio

  • Artist statement

  • At least five images representing the type of artwork anticipated to be on display.

  • *Note: Artists must reside in one of the following Midlands counties: Calhoun, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, Sumter, Lee, Clarendon, Newberry, and Aiken.

Selection Process:

Submissions will be reviewed by CAE’s selection committee. Artists selected for the rotating art exhibit will be notified December 15th with a public announcement on December 19th.

Exhibit Requirements:

The exhibition location will be in the connector of the terminal, the walkway between the security checkpoint and the departure/arrival gates. Selected exhibits must contain a minimum of twelve pieces as there are twelve wall columns in the location, six on each side of the walkway. (Multiple images/clustered pieces of work can be arranged on one column if desired/space allows).

CAE will provide labels for each piece in the exhibit to include artists’ name, contact information and the title, dimensions, type of medium and selling price of the piece. CAE will also provide signage for the exhibit to include the artist’s bio and/or statement.

Exhibitions must be physically suited to the space, allowing for uninterrupted traffic flow. If selected, artists agree to suitably frame, wire and install their artwork at their own expense. Artists must be willing to sign CAE’s Artwork Loan and Hold Harmless Agreement.

Selected artists are welcome to preview the exhibit location by contacting Samantha Kingsmore, Marketing Manager, at S.Kingsmore@flycae.com, as a staff escort is required to access the location.

Insurance:

Art displayed at CAE is insured by the Columbia Metropolitan Airport while on site; however, the transportation to and from the airport is not covered. Prior to installation, the selected artists will provide CAE with a description of the exhibit pieces to include the title and value of each piece.

Things to Know:

CAE does not charge artists to exhibit their work but will require a 5% commission on all pieces sold. This commission will be reinvested into the CAE Art in the Airport program – enhancing display opportunities and required signage. All art transactions must be conducted between CAE, the artist, and the purchaser.

Social media and the mobile web have given rise to a strange phenomenon called the selfie. What is a selfie? A portrait of yourself, visual or written, usually shared on a social networking website. There are many selfie styles, and numerous psychological factors that might drive any specific person to create a selfie and share it.

This exhibition will explore the wide arena of selfies, either from the perspective of the artist or writer themselves, or an alter ego, as if from another person, animal, mythical or fantasy character…anything the artist or writer can imagine. Writers might share their visions of themselves in poetry or short verse.

CALL for Artists: Deadline for 701 CCA Prize 2014 Nears

Call to Artists 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, S.C., announces the second installment of the 701 CCA Prize, an art competition and exhibition for professional South Carolina artists 40 years and younger occurring every other year. The project will take place this year with a juried process resulting in a October – December exhibition for the competition’s three finalists and an award celebration announcing the winner. Eligible artists are invited to apply for the 701 CCA Prize by completing and submitting the application package by September 8, 2014.

“With this second installment of the 701 CCA Prize, 701 Center for Contemporary Art continues to add a crucial component to the eco-system and infra-structure for artists and the visual arts in South Carolina,” 701 CCA board chair Wim Roefs said. “The 701 CCA Prize is the most important platform to highlight some of the extraordinary young talent in South Carolina, and as such, this competition and exhibition has come to fill a void, not unlike 701 CCA South Carolina Biennial has with respect to a regular overview of contemporary art in our state.”

The project’s purpose is to identify and recognize artists 40 years and younger whose work is exemplary in its originality, shows awareness of artistic developments and is of high artistic merit. The 701 CCA Prize will be awarded to one young professional South Carolina artist for outstanding art production since January 1, 2012. Aside from the age requirement, eligible artists must currently live in South Carolina. They must have or have had a solo exhibition in a museum, art center, regular commercial gallery or a designated gallery space in a cultural facility between September 1, 2012 – September 1, 2014. They also must fulfill several practical requirements outlined in the application guidelines. The application fee is $25.

An independent jury of three art professionals will select three finalists for the 701 CCA Prize. The three finalists will be included in the 701 CCA Prize Exhibition from October 30 – December 21, 2014, at 701 CCA. The exhibition’s opening reception will be October 30. The 701 CCA Prize Winner will be announced during the 701 CCA Prize Celebration on November 27, 2014.

The 701 CCA Prize Winner will receive a six-week, paid residency at 701 CCA; a solo exhibition at 701 CCA; consultation services from a professional advertising and marketing firm; and an ad in a national publication. The jurors for the 701 CCA Prize 2014 will be announced later.

“The 701 CCA Prize is loosely based on the Turner Prize for artists in the United Kingdom,” board chair Roefs said. “The Turner Prize is one of the most prestigious art awards in the world and generates a lot of exposure for and excitement about the finalists. While the 701 CCA Prize differs in several ways from the Turner Prize, we hope that with a South Carolina context, it will trigger similar interest and excitement.”

For further inquiries, contact director@701cca.org or call Sheldon Paschal at (803) 319.9949.
