ARTIST PROFILE: PASCALE BILGIS Brings Turkey and France to her Art

Pascale Bilgis grew up in a small village in Burgundy, France, and later in Dijon for her studies. At the age of 18, she left her homeland to continue her studies at the University of South Carolina where she received her BA in photography. After graduating, she worked as an archaeological photographer in southern Turkey and as an art assistant at the Pierre LOTI French School of Istanbul. While in Turkey she began to pursue a new passion for painting and ceramics. She moved back to the States in 2016 and became very active in the artist community in South Carolina. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions throughout the state and has won numerous awards. She is a member of South Carolina Artists and currently lives in Lexington, SC. HOME – New work
A multimedia artist focusing on landscapes, in her series Home, Bilgis recalls significant landscapes from her own life: the small French village of her childhood; Turkey, where she worked as an archeological photographer; and her current home, South Carolina. Working in acrylic, Bilgis splits her compositions into geometric sections using different color palettes to show the landscapes in different times of day or different seasons. She adds buildings in ceramic or wood relief. The architecture of the buildings helps identify her landscapes as belonging to specific regions: she creates the simple cottages of rural France, the bustling cityscape of Istanbul, and the nostalgic country houses of South Carolina. She chooses to show the buildings in ceramic relief to emphasize the durability of human habitations in contrast to the natural world, which reflects the changing seasons. “As the landscape is ever changing, homes remain in their original state,” Bilgis says.

Little Flat People – Mixed media
In her exhibition, Little Flat People, Bilgis seamlessly blends two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements to demonstrate the fundamental similarities between people. The artist presents little figures set among pebbles, wood frames, and panels with vibrant abstract expressionist landscapes as backgrounds. “After 2 years creating vivid abstract landscapes with ceramic architectural relief, I wanted to keep working with clay and acrylic colors but in a more meaningful way. One day while collecting pebbles on a beach in southern Turkey, I came up with the “Flat Little People” series,“ Bilgis explains. Made of clay and fired at 2000 degrees, the figures all look alike in that they are flat and uniform, but in truth they are not “flat” at all, they seem to be very lively and interesting. It is up to the viewer to imagine their emotions through their postures and implied actions.

Bilgis is one of the more than 100 artists whose work will be shown at the Cottontown Art Crawl on March 12th in Columbia, SC.

If Art presents Roger Beebe - Films for One to Eight Projectors - Wednesday March 2nd

Roger Beebe is a filmmaker whose work since 2006 consists primarily of multiple-projector performances and essayistic videos that explore the world of found images and the "found" landscapes of late capitalism. He has screened his films around the globe at such unlikely venues as the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square and McMurdo Station in Antarctica as well as more likely ones including Sundance and the Museum of Modern Art with solo shows at Anthology Film Archives, The Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City, and Los Angeles Filmforum among many other venues. His work has been supported by residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts and the MacDowell Colony and elsewhere.

Next week, Wim Roefs welcomes innovative film professor Roger Beebe to the If Art Gallery on Lincoln Street for a performance of Films for One to Eight Projectors and Jasper plans to be in the house. Artists and patrons of all arts disciplines are invited to attend and would be wise to do so. Film has a unique way of spurring creativity that stems from its multi-sensory stimulation, usually presented in an immersive environment, that scholars are still trying to understand. Here’s an opportunity to do some research on your own.

“Roger Beebe's films provide an exciting opportunity to explore new boundaries within film, performance and installation,” University of South Carolina media arts professor Carleen Maur says. “His films provide an experience that asks audiences to explore complex spatial, sonic and image relationships.” Ohio State art professor Beebe will present a film performance at if ART Gallery, Columbia, SC, on Wednesday, March 2, 2002, at 7:00 pm. Suggested donation is $5.

Beebe will operate and perform with several 16mm film projectors, showing several new works alongside some of his best-known projector performances. The latter will include the seven-projector, show-stopping Last Night of the Dying Stars of 2008/2011. Beebe also will include a sampling of recent essayistic videos, presented as live-narrated documentaries. Topics will include a range from the forbidden pleasures of men crying to the racial politics of font choices and the real spaces of virtual economy.

“Beebe’s films are both erudite and punk, lo-fi yet high-brow shorts that wrestle with a disfigured, contemporary American landscape,” Atlanta’s Creative Loafing wrote. The Independent Weekly said that Beebe’s “implicitly and explicitly evoke the work of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, all photographers of the atomic age whose Western photographs captured the banalities, cruelties and beauties of imperial America."

Beebe has since 2007 had more than 130 solo exhibitions all over the United States and abroad, the latter in Mexico, Finland, Spain, France, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom.

ARTIST PROFILE -- Rusty Sox and Titanic Alley

Love that paisley!

JASPER: When did you first begin to pursue visual art? Where and when did you train, or are you self-taught?

SOX: I decided to experiment with making bow ties in 2013. I was craving a creative pursuit that combined my love of thrift store shopping and fashion. I decided to use cast-away garments to upcycle into new wearable art in the form of bow ties. I bought an inexpensive sewing machine and made some patterns from old, deconstructed ties. I taught myself how to sew and how to make ties.

 

JASPER: What mediums in visual arts do you typically use and why? 

SOX: I use vintage and recycled fabrics, mostly acquired from area thrift stores.

 

JASPER: Where do you work now and where do you show your work? 

SOX: I have a studio at home. I primarily show and sell at local craft shows and through my web site www.titanicalley.com. 

I was included in the 2015  “Carolina Makers” exhibition at the South Carolina State Museum and was runner-up to “Best in Show” at the 2017 Crafty Feast.

 

JASPER: Who have been your greatest influences as an artist? 

SOX: I am inspired by the creations and philosophies of the early 20th Century Arts and Crafts movement and by the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Locally, I was inspired by the late “Refashionista” Jillian Owens who demonstrated how cast-off clothes could become beautiful and useful again.

 

JASPER: What do you feel makes your art unique? 

SOX: I think the recycled nature of my materials, as well as the contrast of colors and textures in many of my bow ties makes my pieces unique.

 

JASPER: Who is your favorite SC-based visual artist and why? 

SOX: I am admittedly biased, but I am a big fan of ceramic artist Paul Moore. I think his work is beautiful and the way he captures the South Carolina landscape in clay is inspiring. I am lucky to share my life with such a great artist and great human being.

 

JASPER: What are you working on now, will we get to see it, and if so, where, and when? 

SOX: I am always working on new ties, but I am terrible about updating my website. I promise to try and do better! I am available for private appointments and custom work as well.

Artists for Africa Hosts 9th Annual PostCard Event in Support of Original Art and Kenyan Youth

When Cooper Rust traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, in 2012 as a volunteer dance instructor, she didn’t expect the experience to stick so strongly to her skin. It did, however, and soon after her return to the states, she founded Artists for Africa, a non-profit organization that supports and provides dance, new experiences, education, and shelter to Kenyan youth.

 In the past decade, the organization has grown, led by C. Rust (Executive Director) and her sister Brie Rust (President), and now hosts a plethora of events in both Kenya and South Carolina, such as bringing dancers from Nairobi to study and perform at the University of South Carolina. 

One of these events, almost as old as the organization itself, is the PostCard Art Event, an evening that pairs small, postcard sized art with drinks and finger foods for a collaborative, community-oriented experience. Next week, the 9th annual PostCard will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn. 

The evening begins with a cocktail hour and appetizers in the spacious lobby, and at 7:00pm, the ballroom will open to reveal the art donated from various established and emerging artists across the United States. Patrons can peruse the art for around an hour as they continue to enjoy drinks and snacks. 

Over 50 artists are included in this show, including some familiar Columbia names like Bonnie Goldberg, Bill Davis, Rob Shaw, Rebecca Lynn Horne, and the Honors Art Students at Dreher High School

The art is available first come, first serve, for $65 per 4” x 6” piece. While the artists sign each piece, these signatures are on the back. Thus, before purchasing, the artist remains anonymous, and patrons are able to select art based on individual desire and attraction. Beyond the small art, larger pieces will also be available, including jewelry and ceramics, each appropriately priced. 

PostCard Art is one of two major annual fundraisers for Artists for Africa, making it one of the organization’s vital events. “100% of the profit goes to support our mission of providing arts and educational opportunities to vulnerable children in some of the world’s poorest slums in Kenya,” B. Rust shares. 

The organization is particularly looking forward to this year’s event after having to move online during the pandemic. “We are very excited to see everyone and share the evening,” B. Rust says. “We have moved our event to the Hilton Garden Inn downtown and are really excited to share this newly renovated space with everyone.” 

B. Rust credits and thanks the group’s Board of Directors, plus their friends and family, for the time they have and will donate to “organize each detail, set everything up, and get it all wrapped up at the end of the evening.” Further, the expenses of the event are generously covered by sponsors, so all money from ticket sales will go directly to Kenya and C. Rust’s efforts in Nairobi.

Don't Miss Complexions Contemporary Ballet at Harbison Theatre!

One thing that anyone who knows anything about professional dance can agree on is that Columbia does not have enough contemporary ballet. Between the Tutu Wars and our dance scene being frozen in a time when full length fairytale ballets ruled the day, (read: the 1980s), we typically only get to see what the rest of the world of dance audiences sees when City Ballet does Body and Movement Explored (coming up soon!) or when the new Columbia Rep Dance Company performs.

Thankfully Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College, under the direction of Kristin Wood Cobb, has a place in its heart for progressive and cutting edge performing arts, including dance!

Coming up on Friday February 19th and for one night only, Complexions Contemporary Dance Company will perform “Stardust: From Bach to Bowie” at Harbison’s state-of-the-art theatre, just off the highway in Irmo.

Rescheduled from the 2019-2020 season, Complexions presents Stardust From Bach to Bowie as a tribute to two fantastic artists who each founded his own musical hemisphere. The show includes "Star Dust," dedicated to the one and only David Bowie, plus an additional repertory set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach. This world-renowned company has been featured on So You Think You Can Dance in the U.S. and Australia.

Complexions was founded in 1994 by Master Choreographer Dwight Rhoden and the legendary Desmond Richardson with a singular approach to reinventing dance through a groundbreaking mix of methods, styles and cultures. Before they take the stage at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College on February 18, the phenomenal dancers of Complexions Contemporary Ballet (CCB) will be in residence!
 
Dancers from the internationally renowned company will teach two 90-minute advanced master classes for advanced dancers from 1:30pm - 3pm. HT@MTC has partnered with the University of South Carolina to host the classes at the UofSC dance studios. The two classes will run concurrently and will be taught by Jillian Davis and Simon Plant of CCB. In addition, a workshop relating to Complexions' repertory and performance style, as well as topics such as improvisation and composition will be offered. Dancers from CCB will also teach two 90-minute community/intermediate classes for dance school and some high school students from 3:30pm - 5pm. These classes will also take place at the UofSC dance studios. CALL for Site Specific Visual Art via Our Friends at CCA

701 CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART 

MILL DISTRICT PUBLIC ART TRAIL OPPORTUNITIES 

We were excited to hear about this unique opportunity for visual artists to break into site specific/public art offered by the good folks at 701 CCA that we wanted to help them spread the word.

Here’s what we know —

701 Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) is seeking artists to develop and execute site-specific works for five gate houses located on the grounds of the historic Granby and Olympia Mills as part of CCA’s Mill District Public Art Trail. The mills are twin Romanesque Revival style, four-story structures designed by W.B. Smith Whaley & Company - the leading mill architects of their time. Once considered two of the most architecturally significant textile mills in South Carolina, today the two massive buildings have been repurposed for residential mill living.  

The application deadline is Wednesday, March 9, 2022.

Budget 

The budget for each gate house is $3,000

Public Art Opportunities

Five gate houses located in front of the two mill buildings offer unique opportunities for site-specific works. The structures were built during WWII.  Designed to compliment the architectural elements of the mill buildings, the Olympia Mill gate houses feature arch-shaped windows and a frieze consisting of terracotta arches. The less decorated Granby Mill gate houses feature dentil brick molding and sash windows.  

The gate houses will function as changing exhibition spaces for temporary public art projects. The projects will be installed for a minimum of one year.  Each gate house is 10’x10’ with a modest interior and lighting. Access to the interior is through doors on the rear or side of each structure. The gate houses are not air-conditioned or heated. Artwork must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions. 

The exteriors of the gate houses are protected under the City of Columbia historic preservation ordinance. Attachments to the exterior are not allowed. 

Eligibility 

Artists working in media appropriate for non-conditioned environments and styles are eligible for consideration. Artists may submit individually or as a team. Artist teams must designate one artist as the lead contact. This opportunity is open to professional artists 18 and over. 

Selection Process

A panel of arts professionals will review artists qualifications and make a selection of artists who will be invited to submit a full proposal. Selections will be based on artistic merit, experience with public art commissions and/or installation art and the ability to complete and install the project by June 20, 2022.

RFQ Requirements

  1. Images of up to five completed commissions/installations that demonstrate your qualifications for the project. Please include the title, medium, dimensions, year completed, location, and a short description. 

  2. Artist resume demonstrating a minimum of five years of professional visual art experience. If submitting as a team, a current resume should be submitted for each team member.  Please compile resumes into one document.

  3. Statement of interest in this particular Mill District opportunity

  4. References that include the names and current contact information for three individuals with whom you have worked, collaborated, or who have commissioned your work in the past. References may be contacted for artists invited to develop a proposal for the commissions

FOR THE CULTURE at the Nick

Rae Groover, who is the marketing and communications manager at Columbia’s Nickelodeon Theatre and has possibly the finest surname we’ve ever heard, has curated an exciting line-up of films for their February FOR THE CULTURE series.

According to the Nick, Reliving Black American Classics, Feb. 4th - Feb. 17th, 2022., “focuses on some of the most popular Black American Classics, ranging from The Wiz to Jordan Peele's Get Out. This series serves as a break from the mundane trauma porn that is often pushed to the foreground when the conversation surrounds the African American experience." Offering “a fun, lighthearted take on the celebration of Black History during Black History Month, For The Culture takes you on a trip down memory lane. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll sing, you'll celebrate.”

At Jasper, we’re excited to see our local indie theatre responding to the call of our own local culture by honoring and more deeply exploring the artists, their messages, and, for good or weird, (thinking White Chicks here) the impetus and reception of some of these films. From classics like Crooklyn and Purple Rain to paradigm rattling heartbreakers like Moonlight and The Color Purple , with lots of music and comedy to boot, this series casts a wide net of contributions to film culture by Black filmmakers and specifically for Black audiences.

Kudos to Rae Groover and our friends at the Nick for being here for us as we deepen our insights into a more inclusive and representative understanding of the power of film.

Mark Your Calendars for Another Melrose Heights Art in the Yard coming up in April

From our friends in the Historic Melrose Community …

The Historic Melrose Art in the Yard will welcome nearly one hundred artists and artisans to show and sell their original work in the historic, downtown Columbia neighborhood. The event will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2022, from noon to 5 pm with art, food and entertainment for visitors.

Historic Melrose Art in the Yard (AITY) held the first art event in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. The idea was to provide local artists and artisans with a safe place to show and sell their wares while also showcasing the historic neighborhood. The event drew hundreds of people to explore the neighborhood. Based on this success and the demand for local art, AITY has become a regular event. The April 10th AITY will be the seventh time the event has been held.

“The Historic Melrose neighborhood is looking forward to welcoming visitors and supporting the local arts scene on April 10th,” said organizer Lila McCullough.  “We will showcase a wide variety of artists and artisans in yards throughout the neighborhood and we will have something for everyone,” said McCullough. 

This event is entirely outdoors and spread over several city blocks, but social distancing and masks are encouraged.

Due to the success of the past events, this one will feature more artists and more food vendors than previous events. The event will also be followed by live music starting at 5 pm. The event is FREE and open to the public. Information and maps will be available on Facebook and Instagram. 

Fall Lines - a literary convergence vols. VII & VIII Releases Sunday Jan. 23 with a 2 pm Reading at Drayton Hall

After too many Covid-related postponements, the Jasper Project is delighted to release the combined Volume VII and VIII issues of Fall Lines- a literary convergence on Sunday, January 23rd at Drayton Hall on the campus of the University of South Carolina. The event will begin at 2 pm.

Strict Covid protocols will be in place. Masks are mandatory except when reading. Only vaccinated contributors and guests are invited to attend.

Contributors to the 2020 and 2021 issues of Fall Lines are invited to choose one piece of their own poetry or prose from the dual-volume journal to read to the public.

Drayton Hall is located at 1214 College Street. Street parking is available. The public is invited to attend.

The Jasper Project shines a light of appreciation Columbia-based photographer Crush Rush, whose powerful portrait of a Black Lives Matter demonstration graces our cover.

Crush Rush is a photographer/photojournalist living and working in Columbia, South Carolina. His photographic eye is keen on identifying and capturing the critical finite moments of ever moving human emotion and the natural world. Rush is self taught but was extremely lucky in his opportunity to work and play along with some of Columbia’s greatest photo makers which helped him hone his skills and gain a deeper appreciation for the craft.

 Known as a social chameleon, Rush constantly engages different types of people from different walks of life to find a common denominator in the grand scheme of things, which he feels allows for him to draw inspiration from very non traditional sources.

Artist Statement:

I feel like the best display of emotion is one that can be felt or portrayed with no words involved. My camera grants me the ability to take a person back to a moment in time by simply showing them a picture. I almost feel as if I have the power to steal grains from the sands of time. For me the love of editing is just as exciting as making the photo and I strive everyday to be a better storyteller.

4th Annual Cottontown Art Crawl is Coming Up - Saturday, March 12, 2022, from 10 am to 3 pm

The fourth annual Cottontown Art Crawl will welcome 115 artists to show and sell their original work in the downtown Columbia neighborhood. The event will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022, from 10 am to 3 pm with more art, more artists, more food and more fun for visitors.

In 2019, the historic neighborhood in downtown Columbia, S.C. held the first Cottontown Art Crawl. The event drew hundreds of people to explore the neighborhood and its businesses and garnered the 2019 Neighborhood Program of the Year from the Columbia Council of Neighborhoods. The event has seen significant growth since. The 2022 event will be the largest yet sponsored by the neighborhood.

“The Cottontown neighborhood is looking forward to supporting the Columbia arts scene on March 12th,” said organizer Julie Seel. “Artists will be selling their work throughout the entire neighborhood. Some of the artists are emerging, some are quite accomplished, and some are award winning, juried artists. So, we truly have something for every level of art enthusiast,” said Seel.

This event is entirely outdoors and spread over several city blocks, but social distancing and masks are encouraged. The organizers of the event are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all and providing an opportunity for artists to showcase and sell their work safely.

Due to the success of the last three Art Crawls, this year boasts many more artists than previous years, as well as an accessibility and entertainment corridor on the 2200 block of Sumter Street with artists, food vendors and entertainment. While artists are located throughout the neighborhood, the corridor is intended to be more accessible to individuals with mobility issues. 

The event is FREE and open to the public and will also feature live music featuring local bands and performers at Indah Coffee’s outdoor stage. The main host station will be located at 2200 Sumter Street, where information and maps will be available. Maps will also be available at specially marked post boxes throughout the neighborhood.

Rhodes Bailey and the Frosty Four bring you Columbia's newest Christmas song

“Climate Change don’t take my Christmas away”

We were delighted when Columbia attorney, musician, and former SC house of representatives candidate Rhodes Bailey shared one of his new projects with us – a powerful, yet fun new Christmas song – and could hardly wait to share it with you. We asked Bailey a few questions about the project, and he graciously shared how and why Climate Change is Killing Christmas” came to be: 

 

Jasper: What was the impetus or inspiration for this song?  

Bailey: My good friend Jake Erwin (whom I gig with from time to time) texted me not long before Thanksgiving and said we should record a Christmas song. I thought to myself "what if someone did a Christmas song about how it's too hot at Christmastime now because of climate change? No snow, no crisp air, etc., and the singer is pining for cold weather."  The more I thought about Christmas imagery, the more I thought about how 80-degree weather spoils the  mood. I sat down and banged this out in about 30 minutes. I sent an acoustic demo to Jake who laughed and said, "Oh man, I just meant we should cover 'Jingle Bell Rock' or something. I didn't know you were going to write a song."   

 

Jasper:  Are there more like it -- is this part of a collection or a solo piece? 

Bailey:  This is a solo piece for now. There's a pretty small window for holiday songs (between Thanksgiving and Christmas), so I had to record it, shoot the goofy video, and get it out fast. I'm at an age now where I only write lyrics when I have something original to say. I make up instrumental music all the time, but only spend time on lyrics if an idea strikes me as particularly interesting and I want to share it.

 

Jasper: Who are the Frosty Five

Bailey:  Spencer Collins (drums and backup vocals) 2) Jake Erwin (keyboards and jingle bells) 3) Evan Simmons (bass) 4) Zac Thomas (expert producer and sound engineer at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC) and 5) Me (12 string Rickenbacker guitar* and vocals). It should really be "Rhodes Bailey and the Frosty FOUR", but FIVE sounded better. We worked hard with Zac to get a vintage Christmas studio sound, like the ‘60s girl groups from the album "A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector" (which everyone should check out by the way) or the Mariah Carey classic.

Jasper:  Was this just for fun or is there a serious motive involved? 

Bailey: This is for fun, but obviously climate change is serious and it's on our minds. I try not to be heavy-handed with lyrics. People respond better to humor than preachiness. An unseasonably warm Christmas is a bummer for everyone - even for folks like us in South Carolina that don't see much snow. It didn't snow a ton when I was a kid, but I remember having a white Christmas when I was in the fourth grade and that was "peak Christmas" for me. No subsequent Christmas could match it. As I grew up, my standards lowered to a "chilly Christmas."  Now we have to settle for "Not-hot Christmas."  We've seen 80-degree Decembers and they are a total buzz kill. The character in this song is lamenting the loss of a wintery holiday season but is still an optimist. He/she is holding out hope that snow and cold weather will return just like Darlene Love does for her baby in "Christmas  (Baby Please Come Home)".  

On Jasper's Radar -- IN THE BUBBLE WITH JAIME HARRISON - A Short Documentary by Emily Harrold

Back in the spring, Wade sellers and I had the opportunity to catch a screening of a film by SC filmmaker Emily Harrold about a battle in the war that American culture doesn’t seem to want to ever end. It was called Meltdown in Dixie.In the wake of the 2015 Charleston Massacre, a battle erupts in Orangeburg, South Carolina between the Sons of Confederate Veterans and an ice cream shop owner forced to fly the Confederate flag in his parking lot. MELTDOWN IN DIXIE explores the broader role of Confederate symbolism in 21st century America and the lingering racial oppression which these symbols help maintain.” (American Documentary) We were impressed by the film and the filmmaker and, once again, proud of another SC artist using their talent and passion to better represent the South as something other than the geographic pit of ignorant rednecks that most of mass media depicts us as.

Now, Harrold is at work completing another documentary that will tell the story of Jaime Harrison and his 2020 senate campaign against Lindsey Graham, called In the Bubble with Jaime. Here’s a snip of info from Harrold’s Kickstarter page:

In keeping with his perpetual support of the city, restauranteur and hockey beauty Kristian Niemi is giving yet another gift to Columbia in the form of a free concert series in the swanky, yet comfy, courtyard of one of his prize restaurants and bar, Bourbon.

Located at 1214 Main Street, Bourbon is a whiskey bar with a menu that focuses on Cajun and Creole delights. Over the course of the pandemic, the intimate drinking restaurant expanded into its larger neighboring space, creating an adjacent bar and lounge with a partially covered multi-level courtyard, perfect for the city’s beloved shoulder seasons when breezes beckon us to sit outside and sip on something artisanal and, often, locally designed and created.

Last week, Brandy and the Butcher gathered a crowd and, this week, the Capital City Playboys will be performing one set only starting at 9 pm.

“I’ve always tried to support local arts, whether musical or in any of the other disciplines, so this was just a natural progression,” Niemi says. “We’ve been doing live music at Black Rooster all year; it was time to do it at Bourbon, also. This series should honestly be called ‘Kristian’s Friends’ Bands’ series since nearly every band has members that are close friends of mine, and I love to see them perform. I chose bands that are all very upbeat, rocking bands for this series. We’ll do more with other genres in the future, but this first series is definitely rocking.” 

The series, sponsored by Jack Daniels distillery, runs through November 13th, and will include, among other Midlands-based groups, Glamcocks, Grand Republic, and will close out the series with Niemi’s self-claimed “best friend” and band, Tom Hall and the Plowboys. Niemi says that while he’ll start up a new concert series in the spring, he will continue to have live music on the patio, but it just won’t be concerts, per se. 

“I want it to be a concert, not background music,” Niemi says. “I really want the crowd to get into it; to get in front of the stage and dance and sing along. I really want a concert vibe. These artists have spent a lot of time writing original material and I want it appreciated as a concert.” 

Jay Matheson of the Capital City Playboys is excited about their show on Saturday night. “I know Kristian loves music and I’ll bet he would like to do more things like this just to be able to hang out himself and enjoy the show with friends,” Matheson says. “It’s a great space for a music show and the first one last week with Brandy and the Butcher was a really good time. Best fun I’ve had at a show in a while.”

“Jack Daniels distillery has signed on as our sponsor for this series, and as a part of that are giving away some cool stuff. In addition to us creating some special cocktails for the bands, Jack Daniels is giving away some swag and some bigger prizes that we’ll announce at the end of the series” Niemi says.  “They’ll include bottles of their Single Barrel selections, some high-end swag, and even an exclusive VIP tour of the distillery followed by dinner.”

The Five Points Association, Loose Lucy’s and Mind Harvest Press are hosting the return of JerryFest—live and in-person—this Sunday, October 3, 2021. A FREE outdoor concert held at the main Five Points fountain on Saluda Avenue, JerryFest runs from 2pm-10pm and features multiple bands all performing Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead music.

 

Since 2014, the event has welcomed around 1,200 to the Five Points village for a family- and pet-friendly afternoon of fellowship and music along with artisan crafts, food, beverage and merchandise vendors. JerryFest was started to commemorate the life and art of Jerry Garcia. Rock guitarist and musical icon, Garcia was best known as the lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead that inspired legions of followers known as “Deadheads.”

 “One of our signature neighborhood events returns with its tie-dyed sea of happy faces all enjoying 'rainbows full of sound,' as the song goes,” says Don McCallister, co-owner of Loose Lucy’s along with his wife Jenn.“

The music for the 2021 edition kicks off with the Columbia Community Drum Circle, followed by a regional headliner, the cleverly-named JGBCB (Jerry Garcia Band Cover Band). Local acts Big Sky Revival, Stillhouse and Gentle Jack round out the main stage bill, with the Red Shack Pickers performing at The Hubbell art installation across from Loose Lucy’s located at 709 Saluda Avenue. 

Fox 102.3 will be broadcasting live from 5pm-7pm at Greene and Harden Streets, and you’ll also get a glimpse of our JerryFest Dancing Bear parading throughout the festival footprint. There will also be an opportunity at the Columbia Fireflies booth for a photo op with Mason and our Dancing Bear.

Recognizing Art in Everything: Noma Warehouse provides workspace and community for all kinds of artists

Noma Warehouse founder Mazie Cook doesn’t believe in the notion of a starving artist.  

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s factory, she created a space to start changing that narrative. Partnering with her mother-in-law, Beth Lawson, and sister-in-law, Cara Lawson, Cook opened Noma Warehouse in mid-March of this year.  

The warehouse started out as something that could only happen “in a dream world,” according to Cook. Beth Lawson was wrapping up nearly 25 years in the tech industry and Cook had recently graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in studio art. Cook found the property and reimagined it as an artist co-op and event space. 

“I live in a dream world,” Beth says, so she pushed Cook to take the plunge. 

With Beth handling the business side of things, Cook donning the title of creative director and Cara, who is a senior at the Darla Moore School of Business, managing the finances, the trio became the perfect team.  

Walking into the warehouse, you’re first greeted with a small, chicly decorated shop that features everything from clothing to candles — all of which are locally made or curated. Walk down a short hallway and you’ll find yourself in a sprawling studio space, complete with a high ceiling, long, classroom-style tables, and, most importantly, a coffee station.  

The four pillars of Noma Warehouse are work, shop, sell, and gather. A close fifth might be working well with others, or more bluntly, as their code of conduct says, “don’t be an asshole.” 

The women believe in embracing “what feels right in the space” according to Cook. During the week, members (who pay monthly fees based on needed studio hours and amenities) use the warehouse space to make and store their art. On Friday nights, the space is transformed into a market with around 15-20 vendors, according to Cara.  

On Saturday, June 19th, Noma Warehouse hosted the Summer Sol•Fest, featuring a slew of local performers and, to highlight Juneteenth, several local Black-owned businesses. This week the venue will also be hosting a summer art camp for kids.  

So, while the space may wear many hats, the women want to focus on supporting art as a profession. “I wanna reteach the community that art is valuable ,” says Cook. “I think using the term ‘starving artist’ is derogatory … it’s bogus and so sometimes you just need to hear that.”

With community being one of the priorities for the space, Beth says younger artists reach out to the older artists for advice and feedback. Cook notes that they have a diverse group of people of different ages, backgrounds, and methods of work. “It all lives here very peacefully and I think allows for a lot of growth. That’s been really neat to watch,” Cook says.

According to Beth, art brings them together. Witnessing that “family” develop is watching her vision come to life. In an art world that can be competitive, Cook notes the graciousness of the artists that frequent the warehouse — they create an open, sharing community.

The women operate business in a way they would want for themselves. In the so-called dream world that they’ve created, the space is a blank canvas — it just takes artists to expand the vision.

NiA Returns with Two New Performances: Fan-Favorite Show HOLLA! and Thought-Provoking Play Eavesdropping

Local theatre company NiA was one of the many organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, in these semi-post-pandemic times, NiA is performing their first large-scale in-person event in months. Over the next two Saturdays, NiA will be showcasing a long-loved project and a newer venture, as well.

Darion McCloud, who has led NiA for 23 years, discusses how difficult it was to not be able to perform during the times when people needed it the most, especially when their mission is rooted in storytelling and literacy.

“That's what we're about. We're about telling stories that don't usually get told, for people that you don't usually get a chance to hear them,” McCloud shares, “COVID effectively shut us down. We had a few small ventures out there: one or two with One Columbia, a Kids in Print for Richland Library, and one called Cocky's Reading Express from the University of South Carolina.” 

Now, the group is coming back with two events, four performances, repeating on two consecutive weekends. HOLLA! a NiA “family staple,” will kick off both Saturdays at 10am, and Eavesdropping, a play by Crystal Aldamuy, will end both Saturdays at 9pm. HOLLA! is a family show for all ages, and Eavesdropping is aimed at adult audiences. 

McCloud says the shows the group are doing are a direct response to the outpouring of love that not only NiA received over the pandemic, but that he himself benefitted from after a serious stroke. This performance is not just a comeback but a way to say thank you.

 “This is my way, and our way, of saying we love you, too. That's why it was important for these shows to be free,” McCloud reveals, “We want these shows to be free to our people, the city, free to anyone who wants to come and who wants to enjoy.” 

HOLLA! was the first event NiA ever did, starting back in 1998 for Somali Bantu, and is a multimedia event that changes in shape, style, and participants each time. For this performance, NiA is featuring the Upstart Crows, a local Shakespeare Company of young actors. The same show will take place both Saturdays, but there will be slight differences due to the spontaneous nature of the event. 

“HOLLA! is exactly what it says—it's big, it's loud, it's color. There's music, there's a lot of laughing, spontaneous dancing, storytelling, finger plays, and more,” McCloud effuses, “And it's for everybody; if you're an old dude like me and you come through, you think you're just coming with the kids, but you're going to find yourself caught up in the fun, too.” 

In contrast, Eavesdropping is a short play in 5 vignettes that addresses themes surrounding love, loss, and living. Aldamuy, who has worked with NiA before, was driven to write this play by her desire to experiment with fully colorblind casting, where any race or gender could fill a role. Aldamuy started writing small sketches, and then combined 5 into this play. 

“This piece is designed for playing with and exploring motivation and subtext, as well as gender, race, sexuality, and age in relationships,” Aldamuy intimates, “And how the audience, as voyeurs, makes assumptions about the deeper meaning behind someone else’s words based on what they look like and who they are talking to.” 

The five vignettes are as follows: First Impressions—two people on their first date; The Long Road Home—a person meets with their ex-spouse’s lover; Final Thoughts—estranged siblings wait for their mother’s ashes; Circling—old loves bump into each other after nearly a decade apart; Collison Course—two people meet on the anniversary of their mutual friend’s death.

The first act will be true to script and fairly identical both weekends; however, after a short intermission, the second act will see audience interaction, with people watching called up to audition and perform previous scenes of the play. 

“After the act break, we're going to ask the audience to come up, and we're going to run it like an audition. We hand them a script right there, but me and the audience are the casting director, so I get to say, ‘Okay, that was really good, Kevin. Could you do the scene again in an English accent?’” McCloud details, “So we get to have fun like that, but also people get to think about how an individual actor impacts a scene. It's a little bit of education, but it's a lot of fun.” 

NiA knew it was time to come back and start telling stories again—audiences needed to engage, with art on the stage and with one another. They chose these shows both for the level of audience interaction and because they are easily manageable under the safety precautions NiA is following for COVID-19.  

The performances will happen on Saturday, June 19, and Saturday, June 26, at their CO-OP at 1013 Duke Street with HOLLA! at 10am and Eavesdropping at 9pm both weekends. There will be outdoor seating, Porta Johns, and safety precautions in place for the safety of patrons. The event is free and first-come, first-served—approximately 100 people can be accommodated.  

“We hope there will be a lot of fun afterwards as well for people who want to hang out and talk about the show,” McCloud offers, “We're just hoping you come, bring yourself, your imagination, your fun, and hopefully a friend too.”

CORONA TIMES - Jasper Talks with Ce Scott-Fitts at the SC Arts Commission

In our continuing coverage of Columbia’s arts community and our responses to COVID-19 and the restrictions it compels, the Jasper Project is touching base with members of the community to see how they are faring. Today, we’re featuring not only an artist in her own right, but also an arts administrator with the South Carolina Arts Commission. Welcome Ce Scott-Fitts, SCAC program director for artist services!

JASPER: Your position at the SC Arts Commission is that of the Artist Services Program Director, and you’ve held this position since last August, is this correct? Isn’t this also a new position for the SCAC? Can you tell us more about why this position was created and what your responsibilities are?  

SCOTT-FITTS: Yes, I have been Artist Services Program Director since August 2019, which was a newly created position. The job was created to provide support and assistance to individual artists of all disciplines for the entire State of SC.  I am responsible for managing fellowships and grants, identifying opportunities, creating sustainability for artists and developing of new programs.

JASPER: What are some examples of the work you do, and when should an artist reach out to you for help?

SCOTT-FITTS: Some of the examples of my work at SCAC include researching funding and creating a discipline based list of resources, reviewing portfolios/work samples, advising and mentoring artists, teaching artists how to apply for grants/fellowship, connecting artists with venues or ways to show their work, helping artists develop a work plan.  Artist can reach out to me if they need assistance with any of these or as they are trying to decide next steps in their career.

JASPER: You came to us from Charlotte. What position or positions did you have in Charlotte that inform your responsibilities at the SCAC?

SCOTT-FITTS: I worked at ArtsPlus (formerly Community School of the Arts) as their Education Director. I was founding staff of McColl Center for Art + Innovation. During my tenure there, I built the education program, curated exhibitions, managed and expanded the residency program and was the Center’s Chef.  I taught at Central Piedmont Community College. I exhibited regionally and nationally at Galleries, non-profits and museums.  Lastly, I have worked as an Arts Consultant with individuals, collectors and non-profits throughout the United States.

JASPER: You are a working artist yourself, is that correct? What is your medium? Have you continued to ply your trade since coming to SC?

SCOTT-FITTS: I began drawing and painting (portraits, figurative work)  at age 6. After completing my undergraduate degree, I began to write poetry, work in mixed media, assemblage, installation and performance.  Over the last 18 months, my work has changed significantly.  Currently I am working on small mixed media/collage portraits.

JASPER: Where did you train and who were (are) your influences?

SCOTT-FITTS: I completed my undergraduate degree at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, Printmaking Major, French Minor. Many years later I was awarded a fellowship to attend Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, where I received my MFA in Painting. Some of my influences have been Bettye Saar, Joyce Scott, Rei Kawakubo/Commes des Garçons, Robert Ferris Thompson, Jeannette Winterson Eva Hesse and Motown

JASPER: You’ve been here for almost a year now, so, how’s it going? What is your take on the SC arts community at large? What do you see as our strengths and weaknesses? (These two questions apply to “normal life” not COVID-19 life.)  

SCOTT-FITTS: Everything is going well in spite of the  pandemic. I remain excited and happy to have the opportunity to live in Columbia, work with SCAC and South Carolina artists. One of our strengths is that we believe in the necessity of the arts and culture on quality of  life.  Our weaknesses are that we struggle to convey the ways art has value and are challenged when it comes to providing  financial support to those individuals who make arts and culture possible.

JASPER: How can we take advantage of our strengths and work to mitigate our weaknesses?

SCOTT-FITTS: We can begin by purchasing work from artists and designers, establish affordable spaces,  develop arts collectives, create alternative venues where artists can showcase performances, music and dance,  and support experimental theater.

JASPER:  And here we are more than four months into a pandemic that has severely curtailed opportunities for arts of all disciplines. Where is your head right now – what are you thinking or worrying about?  

SCOTT-FITTS: First, I reject the idea of return  to “normal”  Some people may have forgotten that much of what we say we want to "get back to” was not working. Systems that had been in place for years were not designed to nurture and support many of the State’s citizens, particularly people of color, but specifically Black people. This includes the many ways art is fostered, accessed, experienced, validated and critiqued. Over the last four months, we have watched some of these systems end or close. I am hopeful that we can take this opportunity to build something that is inclusive and equitable.

JASPER: What are some examples of problem solving for artists during Corona times that you have seen implemented and are effective?

SCOTT-FITTS: Artists are developing new ways to collaborate and engage audiences. They are also incredibly generous with their time and share resources freely. Some artists are discovering alternative ways of showing  and experiencing work virtually.

JASPER: What suggestions or advice do you have to offer artists of all disciplines as they push forward through these difficult times?

SCOTT-FITTS: Self-care must be addressed so that artists have the mental, physical  and creative energy to continue to make work.

Corona Times: Darion McCloud ‘Storyteller’ Brings Families Together with The Magic Purple Circle

In these scary but often enlightening times, Jasper continues to interview artists, sharing their creations and ideas, new and old, with the community. I recently talked with local artist, performer, and all around wonderful human being, Darion McCloud, about his new project The Magic Purple Circle, in which he reads children’s stories to families at home during quarantine.  

Jasper: You’ve been creating art and performing for so long now. How has that changed or transformed recently with COVID and other social/political events.

McCloud: We are in a real, full-blown pandemic with people in leadership positions not knowing what to do, and now it's out of control. I never imagined the economic, the physical, the spiritual/cultural, the mental havoc it could wreak, and it's pushed me to The Magic Purple Circle. This is my response to the world being on fire. And fire can hurt, but it also can burn away impurities and forge things. I'm thinking after this, hopefully, we learn our lesson until we finally think, "You know, healthcare is pretty important for everybody. Police brutality, police just rolling up on people and killing them is wrong." These are things that we can fix. These are things that we're going to have to fix. That's one thing the uprisings and the pandemic have shown us. All these things that we have, these privileges that we think we have, even the ones we don't have but we think we have, they're not a birthright. We think it's a birthright to go wherever we want to go, and do whatever we want to do, and have whatever we want to have. No, those are the things that people have worked for, and sacrificed, or some people have stolen, but you don't just get them because you're an American. And, so, part of what The Magic Purple Circle is supposed to do is to bring a little bit of joy into while the world is burning. And hopefully we're burning off impurities, and we're leaving behind things we don't need. You can still smile and laugh and be silly. This is going to sound grandiose, but I really do believe this: sometimes just laughing, just loving, is revolutionary.

Jasper: Of all things to create as a response in these times, why a children’s series?

McCloud: Actually, my first time performing, period, was for children as a storyteller. In 1993, I started working with what was then Richland County Public Library. I’m lucky that today a large part of my practice is still with families and with kids. This past March, it was Dr. Seuss's birthday, so I was entered into a lot of Dr. Seuss gigs, and I just thought about all those kids who were at home, not reading Green Eggs and Ham, which is one of my favorite books ever. I would see all these posts online about people complaining about being stuck home with their kids, and I saw my own daughter struggling. She was quiet, but that was the scary part. I knew she had to be struggling. So, this was my little contribution to all that, and people just dug it. People dug it, dug me, and kept hitting me up, and I started making more. Before I knew it, people were hitting me up like, ‘Hey, my kid's mad at you because you haven't made a Magic Purple Circle in a week.’

Jasper: The title – Magic Purple Circle – is so fun. How did you come up with it?

McCloud: I'm from Columbia, and when I first started working with the library, the story time room was on the other side of the building, and inside the story time room, there was a big, plushy purple carpet, and then inside that carpet was a deeper purple circle that I called the story time circle. I used to have a little speech I gave to the attendees, to the people coming to the story time. I'd tell all the parents that if you sat inside the magic purple circle, you had to do everything we did. That included singing songs, the Hokey Pokey, whatever. It was kind of a release, an excuse, like, "Well, I have to do the Hokey Pokey, because I'm inside the purple circle," without them admitting, "I love the Hokey Pokey!" Because of that I always called it the magic purple circle, so when I was trying to think of name for this project, it just brought me full circle to where I first started: sharing stories with families.

Jasper: And how do you choose what stories to share?

McCloud: A lot of it for me is nostalgia. A lot of the books are old. They're books from 20 years ago that I thought were special. Or maybe it’s just something I think is cool, something I think is interesting. Sometimes it’s something I think it is more suited for other people, something I think reflects people. Even today, children of color are underrepresented in children's literature. I don’t know – it's not a real scientific process. It's just what moves me. What moves me, what I think will move someone. It's kind of cool, people often say, "Oh man, this made my day," or sometimes, every blue moon, somebody's like, "I cried". It's just cool. And, I mean, I love picture books. I don't think you outgrow a great picture book. Everything that you're looking for in the arts, period, is there. Great storytelling, great words, economy of language.

Jasper: Would you say the whole process of the show is organic like that?

McCloud: Yeah, it's unscripted. I'm real comfortable in that environment. One of the things I did was I ran an improv group for a while. I just say what's real for me. That doesn't mean I don't make mistakes. If it's a minor mistake, I just keep it. Like if I mispronounced a word or something. And I kind of like that, too, because I like the kids knowing. It's not so sterile as a lot of times on television, there's never a flub. So unknowingly, you make this impression that a flaw is a mistake. I just know I'll make a flub and come back and say, "Oh, I mispronounced that word." I think it's easy because I speak my truth, and it's easy because I'm doing what I love, and I hope what I love, what I'm doing, is good for people. I love it. I love what I'm doing. I love the books. I love doing that, I love having fun with the families. So, like I say, I just kind of speak the truth of the moment.

Jasper: Do you plan to do The Magic Purple Circle for as long as you can?

McCloud: Yeah. I didn't envision it getting where it is, and it's made me think. One of the things I've always wanted to do is I want a TV show. I'm hoping The Magic Purple Circle can evolve into a family TV show. I grew up on Electric Company, Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, Zoom. My childhood is the '60s, '70s. So, I want to do something like that.

Jasper: And you said Magic Purple Circle moves around, right?

McCloud: Yeah, I did one for Colleton County right at the beginning of the summer and with the Columbia Museum of Art a couple weeks ago. One just aired with Richland Library, and I still want to do smaller ones for families.

Jasper: What's the best way people can support you and the project?

McCloud: Find Magic Purple Circle on YouTube. I mean I'm just like every other artist during COVID-19. This is what I do. This is my gig. Money is always appreciated. 99% of the people you see on stage, they're out of work now. That's how it is for most artists. We're making work, but even that is limited. People sharing the work, that helps a lot because hopefully the more people see it and the more people can talk to me about it, the better I can make it. People may know networks or venues I could use. But the most important thing for me is sharing. If you don't have any money, if you don't have any influence...that's not what I'm doing this for. I'm doing this just for people, hopefully to make people's day a little bit better. Make people laugh a little bit, make people hug their kids a little tighter.

Jasper: Have you had help from people putting the show on and sharing it?

McCloud: I'm kind of a one-man gang, one-man operation. Michaela [Pilar Brown] has done some great work; she designed my logo for this. I’ve co-created with Molly Ledford, Heather Leigh, Bonita Peeples, and Drew Baron. Sam McWhite has done this incredible music. When I can expand it, I have people, but for the most part, it's just kind of me.

Jasper: And, as a storyteller, do you have people or figures that have inspired you?

McCloud: There are too many to name but Prince, African American painter Jacob Lawrence, comic book creator Jack “King” Kirby, and the Pittsburgh Steelers to name a few.

Jasper: How about other adventures? Are you working on any other projects right now?

McCloud: It's not defined yet, but I’m trying to work on some adult stuff, too, because working for families is good, but there's more. I'm lucky enough to have those two halves. To love the family work and have that, but also, I love to do very…I call it the backbreaking stuff. So, like when the uprisings happened, the conversations now, these are conversations I've been having with my art since I became an adult, when I was still a visual artist. As a theater artist, this is the type of work I love. Like I said, I call it the backbreaking planes, where it forces you to look in the mirror, even if it's not ‘you’ that you see. Maybe it's your friend or maybe it's your family or maybe it is you, but it forces you to look. Or maybe the you, the we, is sometimes larger. Race, gender, class, nationalism, whatever. I love that type of work in my adult work, so I'm working on some stuff to address that.

Jasper: Well, as you and others continue to work on these projects, do you have any advice you’d give to creators who want to respond to this world on fire but don’t know how?

McCloud: I can't really give advice but trust yourself. It's different for everybody. Somebody might take two years to process all this, or it ekes out into your work little by little, or you do one big thing. I think that's one of the traps of this thing has been everybody feels like, "Well, I'm stuck at home. I have to create. I should be creating. I have all this time." And you put this weird pressure on yourself. Hell, I'm still processing. I'm working, making things, but I'm not done processing. For one thing, this thing, it shifts so often. I would just say trust yourself, man. Don't try to beat yourself up too much. Just trust yourself.
